Scale changes everything
Cayo Levantado is charming and small: one hill, a couple of beaches, part of it occupied by a resort. Visits run two or three hours, usually appended to a whale watching morning. Saona is a full national park island where the day is the destination: multiple beaches, the Palmilla natural pool, Mano Juan fishing village and a proper catamaran journey to get there.
The seasonal wrinkle
Between mid January and late March, Samana bay hosts thousands of humpback whales, and the whales plus cay combo becomes one of the country's best days. Outside those ten weeks, Cayo Levantado loses its trump card while Saona plays the same hand all year. December to April is prime for both coasts, detailed month by month in our best time guide.
Base location decides
- Staying Punta Cana, Bavaro, La Romana or Bayahibe: Saona, no contest. The dock is an hour away and tours include pickup.
- Staying Samana or Las Terrenas: Cayo Levantado in whale season, Los Haitises otherwise.
- Touring the whole country: do both coasts, they are different Dominican Republics.
