The Natural Pool at Saona Island
What the natural pool actually is
Kilometers of shallow sandbank rise from the seabed off Saona's west coast, creating a pool of hip deep, gin clear water in the middle of open sea. Boats anchor along its edge and guests wade in bath temperature water over rippled white sand. Cushion sea stars, the famous orange starfish, feed across the bank. It is the most photographed moment of the Dominican south coast.
The starfish rules
Starfish stay in the water, always. Lifting them out for photos damages their tube feet and can kill them, and park rangers fine handlers. Photograph them through the surface, crouch beside them, let them be. Decline the roaming photographers who pose guests holding sea life: your phone in a waterproof pouch takes the same picture ethically.
When the pool is at its best
Before 10:30 am the bank is silent, glassy and nearly private, the fleet converges between 11 am and 2 pm when dozens of boats raft along the edge with music and bar service, and by 3:30 pm quiet returns. First departures and private charters that reverse the standard route own the calm windows. Water clarity peaks in the December to April dry season.
How tours include the stop
Virtually every Saona itinerary includes 30 to 45 minutes at the pool, usually on the return leg. Crews hand down guests at the boat ladder, serve drinks standing in the shallows and help non swimmers, the pool needs no swimming at all. Confirm the stop is listed if booking an unusual route, and budget your camera battery accordingly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep is the Saona natural pool?
Waist to chest deep on an adult, roughly one meter, over firm rippled sand. Children stand comfortably on the shallower stretches and life jackets are freely available from every boat.
Can you touch the starfish at the natural pool?
No. Taking starfish out of the water harms and can kill them, and rangers enforce fines. Observe and photograph them in the water, the image is better anyway: their colors saturate beneath the surface.
Is the natural pool included in every Saona tour?
Almost every standard tour includes the stop, typically 30 to 45 minutes on the return crossing. A few speed focused or fishing charters skip it, check the itinerary line before booking if the pool is your priority.
